Evermon

New Evermon

Seven new Evermon, and every one of them can be shiny

· 4 min read

The Everdex is up to 71. Three lines arrived this week, and they have nothing in common except that none of them is anything you would want to meet.

The one that waits

Crunture

Nº065

Crunture

VerdantVenom

Sits open all day looking like something worth landing on, which is the whole of the plan. The pink is advertising and the smell is a lie, and both of them work.

Crunture sits open on a stem all day looking like something worth landing on, which is the entire plan. Verdant and Venom, and it fights the way it hunts: it lets you come.

Crunchomp

Nº066

Crunchomp

VerdantUmbra

Stopped waiting to be landed on. It walks the hedge line after dark, finds whatever is asleep in there, and the hedge is quieter every morning.

At Lv.27 it stops waiting. Crunchomp walks the hedge line after dark — Verdant and Umbra now, which buys it a Psyche immunity and costs it almost everything else. Eight types hit it hard and Insect hits it four times as hard. It is the fast, thin one of the two Venom and Verdant lines, and that is the bargain.

The one that brings the seabed

Surfin

Nº067

Surfin

TideTerra

Rides the break all day on a slab of its own beach, and has never once been seen to paddle. The wave is doing what it is told.

Surfin rides the break on a slab of its own beach and has never been seen to paddle. Tide and Terra together is the sturdiest typing in the game: immune to Bolt, weak to only two things.

Surfquake

Nº068

Surfquake

TideTerra

Brings the seabed up with the water, which is the part nobody is ready for. The tide goes out a long way first, and the ones who know what that means are already inland.

Surfquake is what happens when the tide goes out a long way first. Its last move is Earthquake — 100 power, no drawback at all, the biggest clean hit anything in the Everdex throws. The creature is called Surfquake. It was always going to end there.

The one you should not let finish

Slaughterpillar

Nº069

Slaughterpillar

InsectUmbra

Eats in one direction and never turns round, so a hedge it has been through is a hedge with a tunnel in it. Nothing it passes is left standing.

It eats in one direction and never turns round, so a hedge it has been through is a hedge with a tunnel in it.

Kakilln

Nº070

Kakilln

InsectUmbra

Hangs in the dark getting harder, and gives nothing away about what is going on inside. Whatever comes out will not be a caterpillar.

Then it hangs itself up in the dark and gets harder. Kakilln has more armour than any other middle form in the game and less health than all of them, and it is the slowest thing in its band by a distance. It is not much fun for twenty-two levels. That is a cocoon.

Slaughterfly

Nº071

Slaughterfly

InsectUmbra

Arrives at the speed the caterpillar could only dream about, and it dreamt about little else. You hear it once, behind you, and that is the whole warning.

And then it is the second-fastest Evermon in the Everdex, with nearly the thinnest skin, and you hear it once, behind you.

Every Evermon can be shiny now

Quieter than three new lines, and probably the bigger change: 28 of the 71 could never turn up in their rare colours at all. Not rarely — never. A creature with no shiny art can't roll one, and most of the missing ones were commons, which is what the grass is mostly made of.

So the one-in-250 the game promises was really closer to one in 530.

They all have their colours now. The odds on the rules page are finally the odds you actually get.

One more thing worth knowing: a first partner rolls for shiny at the same odds as anything wild. It always has. Until last week nothing said so, and a shiny starter would quietly arrive in its ordinary colours. Now the screen that introduces it shows the real ones, and says how rare they are.
